Brad Faxon wins the Buick Championship

CROMWELL, Conn., Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Brad Faxon, who started the day seven shots off the lead, Sunday won the Buick Championship at Cromwell, Conn., in a playoff with Tjaart van der Walt.

The pair ended at 14-under-par 266 after 72 holes.

Faxon shot a course-record-tying, 9-under 61 in the final round while van der Walt closed with a 6-under 64.

Faxon, 44, bagged his eighth PGA Tour title. For his victory, he earned a winner's check of $774,000.

Third-round leader Justin Rose shot 1-under 69 Sunday and finished at 13-under 267.

Michael Putnam, who turned pro this week after receiving a sponsor's exemption into the tournament, shot a closing 7-under 63 and shared fourth place at 12-under 268 with Jerry Kelly and former British Open champion Ben Curtis.
