Cubs put Aramis Ramirez on the DL

CHICAGO, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- The Chicago Cubs Friday placed third baseman Aramis Ramirez on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left quadriceps muscle.

He suffered the injury Wednesday against Atlanta while running out a ground ball.

"We'll see how he is at the end of the 15 days," said Manager Dusty Baker on the Cubs' Web site.

The Cubs used Nomar Garciaparra at third base Friday against Florida.

Despite the Cubs' team woes, Ramirez is having a very good season offensively, batting .302 with 31 home runs and 92 RBI.

Chicago has recalled shortstop Ronny Cedeno from Triple-A Iowa. In 65 games with Iowa, Cedeno was batting .355 with eight homers, 14 doubles and 36 RBI. This will be Cedeno's third stint with the Cubs.


Pistons sign Dale Davis

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Aug. 26 (UPI) -- The Detroit Pistons Friday signed veteran free agent forward Dale Davis to a multi-year contract.

Financial terms were not released.

Davis has spent most of his 14-year NBA career with the Indiana Pacers and has also played with Portland and Golden State. He has career averages of 8.4 points and 8.3 rebounds per contest.

"We are excited to add Dale Davis to our roster for the upcoming season," said Detroit President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars. "Dale is a veteran presence that has proven himself in the regular season and playoffs. His defensive presence and rebounding will help solidify our bench while his experience will provide added value in our locker room."

Last year, after being released by Golden State in March, Davis, 36, signed with Indiana and had 6.9 points and 8.9 rebounds per contest in 25 games.

With the Pistons, he will be reunited with former Portland Trail Blazers teammate Rasheed Wallace.


Huggins' replacement named at Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- The University of Cincinnati Friday named Andy Kennedy as the interim men's basketball coach to replace the ousted Bob Huggins.

Huggins and the school mutually agreed to terms of a contract buyout on Wednesday, ending the coach's 16-year tenure with the Bearcats.

Kennedy had been a member of Huggins' staff the past four years. He was named an assistant coach in 2001 and was elevated to associate head coach last year.

"I am very grateful for this opportunity," Kennedy said at a news conference. "I am here, as most people are, because of Bob Huggins. I never in a million years dreamed I would be sitting here under these circumstances, but it is what it is. We all must attempt to move forward."

This will be Kennedy's first head coaching position. The Bearcats will join the Big East Conference next winter.


Dwight Gooden to remain behind bars

TAMPA, Fla., Aug. 26 (UPI) -- A Florida circuit court judge Friday ordered former major league pitcher Dwight Gooden Friday was ordered to remain in jail until October.

The former all-star and Cy Young Award-winner turned himself in to police in his hometown of Tampa, Fla., Thursday after being on the run for four days. He fled police, who were trying to charge him for driving under the influence.

During the incident, Gooden was observed by police weaving in and out of traffic. He fled after refusing to take a Breathalyzer test.

He also faces a hearing on a domestic violence charge. Reports indicate Gooden's attorneys Friday refused to talk about his whereabouts this week.
