Another penalty for South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C., Aug. 25 (UPI) -- The NCAA Wednesday hit South Carolina with an extra year of probation for rules violations by its football program during the tenure of Lou Holtz.

He was coach for the last six years before retiring last spring. Holtz was succeeded by Steve Spurrier, whose staff had suggested its own punishment.

"We are satisfied with the results," Spurrier stated in a release.

In July, the school recommended a two-year probation after admitting to 10 NCAA violations during the period from 1999-2002 when Holtz was coach.

The NCAA Committee on Infractions imposed a limit of 50 on the number of permissible expense-paid campus visits in football for both the 2005-06 and 2006-07 academic years. It also proposed a limitation of two fewer total financial aid awards in football than otherwise permitted by NCAA legislation for both years.

ESPN reported Wednesday night that the school will still be bowl-eligible and will not be banned from television appearances.
