Heatley was selected by Atlanta second overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He has posted 80 goals and 101 assists in 190 NHL games.

Heatley's NHL tenure has been marred by tragedy. He was the driver in a one-car auto accident in September 2003 that killed Thrashers teammate Dan Snyder. Heatley pleaded guilty to several misdemeanor charges stemming from the accident and was sentenced to three years' probation in February.

"Today's transaction was set in motion when Dany requested a trade to another team due to his unique personal circumstances," a Thrashers officials said.

Heatley, 24, missed most of the 2003-04 season due to injuries from the accident, totaling 13 goals and 12 assists in only 31 games.

Sherman, Packers agree on extension

GREEN BAY, Wis., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- The Green Bay Packers and Coach Mike Sherman reached agreement on a two-year contract extension that keeps his pay flat at $3.2 million a year.

Sherman, who is in the final year of his coaching contract after being removed as general manager in January, is to get essentially the same pay in 2006 and 2007 as this year, the Milwaukee Journal reported.

The team did not ask to cut Sherman's pay when he was replaced by Ted Thompson as general manager.

Neither Thompson, who negotiated the contract, nor Sherman's agent would comment on the deal, which the newspaper said could be approved by the NFL and signed by Sherman by the end of the week.

Although initially hurt by team President Bob Harlan's decision to remove him as general manager, Sherman appeared more relaxed this summer than the four years when he tried to do it all, the newspaper reported.
