Dementieva reaches Pilot Pen quarterfinals

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- U.S. Open runner-up Elena Dementieva advanced to the quarterfinals at the $600,000 Pilot Pen Tennis tournament Tuesday with a second-round victory.

Dementieva defeated fellow Russian Vera Douchevina 6-2, 6-4 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale.

World No. 6, Dementieva will face Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues in the quarterfinals. Medina Garrigues moved up by beating Argentine Gisela Dulko 6-0, 6-7 (10-12), 6-4.

In opening-round action Tuesday, Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova beat Spaniard Nuria Llagostera Vives 6-4, 6-2 and German Ann-Lena Groenefeld defeated Croatian Jelena Kostanic 6-4, 6-1.

Hantuchova will meet sixth-seeded Swiss Patty Schnyder on Wednesday.
