ST. LOUIS, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Veteran third baseman Scott Rolen of the St. Louis Cardinals is pondering season-ending surgery on his ailing left shoulder.
Rolen, who has been limited by the ailment all season, reached the conclusion after getting a second opinion Thursday, according to the club's Web site.
"It was put to me, from (Cincinnati Reds trainer) Dr. (Timothy) Kremchek, that, 'you need to have surgery,'" Rolen told reporters Thursday night. "'When all the smoke clears,' he says, 'you don't have any options. You have to have surgery.'"
Rolen is batting only .235 with five home runs and 28 RBI in 56 games this season. He has been on the disabled list since July 22 with what was termed inflammation of his left rotator cuff.
He is considered one of the game's best defensive third basemen and has a career average of .284.
