Red Sox get Remlinger from Cubs

BOSTON, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- The Boston Red Sox Tuesday acquired veteran left-hander Mike Remlinger in a trade with the Chicago Cubs.

Boston sent minor league right-hander Olivo Astacio to the Cubs. Remlinger, 0-3 with 4.91 ERA in 35 games, was designated for assignment by the Cubs Friday.

The 39-year-old southpaw has struggled mightily when facing left-handed hitters this season. They were batting .326 against him.

The 13-year major league veteran was named to the National League All-Star team in 2002 while with Atlanta. He was 7-3 that season with a career-best ERA of 1.99 ERA. Remlinger signed with the Cubs as a free agent the following off-season.

Boston fills a need after the release of Alan Embree in late July. Embree eventually signed with the New York Yankees. Boston also has veteran Mike Myers.

Astacio, 21, signed with the Red Sox as a free agent in 2002.
