DETROIT, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- The Detroit Red Wings Monday signed veteran goaltender Chris Osgood to a one-year contract.

Financial terms of the deal were not released.

Osgood returns to the team where he won a Stanley Cup in 1998. He had spent eight years with the Red Wings (1993-2001) and also was a backup to goalie Mike Vernon on the 1997 championship team.

"We're very happy to have Chris return to the Red Wings," said general manager Ken Holland. "He's a veteran goaltender who knows what it takes to compete and win championships in a great hockey city like Detroit."

In 1995-96, Osgood led the NHL with 39 wins and paired up with Vernon to capture the Jennings trophy for lowest team goals against average.

The three-time All-Star and 11-year veteran is 221-110-46 with 30 shutouts and a 2.40 goals against average while with Detroit.
