DENVER, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- The Colorado Avalanche Saturday signed all-star forward Milan Hejduk to a five-year contract.

The 87th overall pick by Colorado in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft has 197 goals in his six-year career and has 219 assists in 470 games.

"We are extremely excited to announce that Milan Hejduk has decided to commit to this franchise for the next five seasons," said Colorado Avalanche President and General Manager Pierre Lacroix. "Since his rookie season in 1998-99, he has been an instrumental part of the success of this franchise."

Hejduk, 29, earned the Maurice Richard trophy as the NHL's top goal-scorer in 2002-03 after posting 50 goals and 48 assists.
