INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- The National Collegiate Athletics Association has extended the contract of NCAA President Myles Brand through Dec. 31, 2009.

The NCAA announced Friday its Executive Committee voted Thursday to extend the contract for two years, and then on an annual basis for the indefinite future through the end of 2009. The Executive Committee can exercise an option as early as 2008 to extend the contract on an annual basis thereafter.

"This is a vote of confidence in the leadership of Myles Brand for intercollegiate athletics over the last two and a half years," said Walter Harrison, president of the University of Hartford and chair of the NCAA Executive Committee. "We are delighted by the strong leadership he has provided to the Association, and we look forward to the contribution he will make in the future."

Brand -- formerly President of Indiana University -- began his tenure as NCAA president on Jan. 1, 2003.
