Report: Palmeiro steroid was potent

NEW YORK, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- The steroid detected in Baltimore Orioles star Rafael Palmeiro has been identified as stanozolol, the New York Times reported.

Citing "a person in baseball with direct knowledge of the sport's drug-testing program," the newspaper Wednesday said stanozolol can be ingested or injected, and usually remains in a person's body for at least one month. Stanozolol, known by the brand name Winstrol, does not come in a dietary supplement.

Dr. Gary Wadler, a professor at New York University who is an expert in sports doping, told the Times stanozolol is a "potent" steroid.

When Palmeiro testified at a March congressional hearing on steroids, he said he never used steroids. After Major League Baseball suspended Palmeiro for 10 days for violating league policy on steroid use, Palmeiro told reporters he never intentionally used drugs.

The Baltimore Sun Wednesday said the drug test that detected steroids in Palmeiro's system was conducted in May. Palmeiro appealed the ruling in secret arbitration hearings in June.

Palmeiro got his 3,000th major league hit July 15. He is one of just four players in big league history with more than 3,000 hits and 500 home runs.
