Duke to get $2 million from former players

DURHAM, N.C., July 29 (UPI) -- Two former players on Duke's 1991 national title squad are donating $2 million to support a men's basketball scholarship.

University President Richard H. Brodhead said on Duke's Web site that a portion of the money would be used for a planned new athletics facility.

A scholarship will be endowed with $750,000 of the gift. The joint gift makes Christian Laettner and Brian Davis the 27th partners in Duke's Legacy Fund, an organization that endows scholarships and provides other support for the basketball program. Each Legacy Fund member has committed at least $1 million to the program.

The pair co-captained the Blue Devils' 1992 squad which successfully defended Duke's NCAA national championship.

"(They were) athletes who care about a lot more than basketball," said Coach Mike Krzyzewski "They have invested in Duke and the Durham community in a number of ways. We are fortunate to have them still be a part of our program."
