CINCINNATI, July 23 (UPI) -- The Cincinnati Reds traded third baseman Joe Randa Saturday to the San Diego Padres, who are struggling to maintain first place in the National League West.
The Padres sent the Reds two minor league pitchers. To make room on the roster for Randa, San Diego demoted pitcher Sean Burroughs to the minors.
There were reports Saturday the Padres had also worked out a deal with Baltimore to acquire pitcher Sidney Ponson for infielder Phil Nevin. However, Nevin had not been asked to waive a no-trade clause in his contract, and started Saturday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Nevin went 1-for-3 with one walk and struck out once in the Padres 2-0 loss to Philadelphia.
The Padres have lost six straight, as their lead over the second-place Arizona Diamondbacks has dwindled to three games, with the Diamondbacks scheduled to play the Atlanta Braves Saturday night.
