SECAUCUS, N.J., July 21 (UPI) -- MetroStars midfielder Amado Guevara is expected to be sidelined three to five weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his left knee.
Team physician Dr. Edward Decter successfully repaired the medial meniscus damage in Guevara's knee Wednesday.
Major League Soccer's reigning MVP was hurt July 16 while playing against Colorado. The injury occurred on a hard tackle late in the 1-1 contest.
Guevara will miss the MLS All-Star Game later this month, when the MLS all-stars meet the English Premier League.
Guevara, a native of Honduras, is the Metros' leader in both goals (6) and assists (6).
The MetroStars are battling for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Division. They struggled without Guevara Wednesday night, losing 1-0 on the road at last-place Columbus.
Guevara's surgery took place at the St. Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center in Livingston, N.J.
