Cubs' Kerry Wood to miss next start

CHICAGO, July 21 (UPI) -- Chicago Cubs right-hander Kerry Wood will miss his scheduled start Monday because of stiffness in his pitching shoulder.

Wood, who has been bothered by a sore shoulder since spring training, left Wednesday's 9-3 loss against Cincinnati after three innings and received a cortisone shot to reduce the inflammation. He was examined Thursday by Reds medical director, Dr. Tim Kremchek.

"The steroid that we injected in there is used to reduce inflammation in the joint," said athletic trainer Mark O'Neal. "The exam was pretty consistent with what he's been feeling all along. He's getting some irritation to the joint from throwing. And this is a pretty aggressive approach to try to quiet it down. Hopefully, it'll respond real well for him."

Wood was placed on the disabled list in May with a shoulder strain and was activated on June 29. He is 3-3 with a 4.67 ERA. He was scheduled to pitch Monday against San Francisco.
