Pats' Bruschi will not play this season

FOXBORO, Mass., July 20 (UPI) -- New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi, who had a stroke in February, will miss the 2005 season for health reasons, the team announced Wednesday.

Bruschi, 32, is recovering from the mild stroke he suffered in February. The following month, he had surgery to repair a hole in his heart, which had allowed a clot to leave his heart and move into his brain, causing the stroke.

He has yet to determine if he will play in 2006.

"(Tedy) has focused on the short-term goal of getting better every day," said Patriots spokeswoman Stacey James. "His health has improved steadily during the past five months and Tedy continues to make daily improvements with his ongoing rehabilitation."

Bruschi made an interception in the Patriots' 24-21 victory over Philadelphia in Super Bowl XXXIX on Feb. 6, helping the Patriots to their third Super Bowl title in four years.
