BOSTON, July 19 (UPI) -- The Boston Red Sox traded a pair of minor leaguers Tuesday for Kansas City Royals infielder Tony Graffanino.
The Royals got minor league pitcher Juan Cedeno and outfielder Chip Ambres in the deal.
The Red Sox needed a second baseman after Mark Bellhorn was put on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a sprained left thumb.
Graffanino has raised his average from .206 on April 30 to .298 by batting .344 (44-for-128) over his last 40 games. However, he has hit safely in only five of his last 13 games since June 24, dropping his average from its season high of .325.
Graffanino, 33, started his major league career with Atlanta in 1996. He also played for Tampa Bay and the Chicago White Sox.
Ambres hit .294 with 10 home runs, 50 RBI and 17 stolen bases at Triple-A Pawtucket. Cedeno, a lefthander, was 2-6 with a 5.63 ERA in 21 games (12 starts) for Single-A Wilmington.
