MLB: Minnesota 3, Kansas City 2 (12 inn)

KANSAS CITY, Mo., July 10 (UPI) -- The Minnesota Twins had to go 12 innings Sunday before edging the Kansas City Royals, 3-2, on an error off a broken-bat infield grounder.

The error by Royals third baseman Mark Teahen on Torii Hunter's grounder enabled Nick Punto to score the winning run.

Luis Rodriguez and Luis Rivas each had two hits and an RBI for the Twins. Justin Morneau finished 3-for-5 with one run scored for Minnesota.

JC Romero (2-2) picked up the win with one inning of perfect relief.

Kansas City's Mike Sweeney had a pair of homers, his second coming in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings, as the Royals lost for only the second time in their last six games. Sweeney has 11 hits in his last 14 at-bats.

Mike Wood (3-3) was tagged with the loss.
