LOS ANGELES, July 7 (UPI) -- Center Andrew Bynum signed a contract Thursday with the Los Angeles Lakers.

He was the team's first-round pick in the recent NBA Draft. The former high schooler was the 10th overall choice in the draft.

At 17, the seven-foot, 270-pounder became the youngest player ever drafted.

Bynum was a McDonald's High School All-American at St. Joseph High School in Metuchen, N.J., where he averaged 22 points, 16 rebounds and five blocked shots per contest as a senior.

Bynum will take play on the Lakers' team in the Summer Pro League in Long Beach, Calif.

In making the announcement of Bynum's signing, General Manager Mitch Kupchak did not disclose contract terms.
