Hall of Fame coach Hank Stram dies at 82

NEW ORLEANS, July 4 (UPI) -- Former Kansas City Chiefs Coach Hank Stram has died at 82.

The Pro Hall of Fame coach died Monday at his home in New Orleans due to complications from his long fight with diabetes and a congestive heart problem.

Stram was elected to the hall in 2003. He had a regular-season record of 131-97-10 as coach of the the Dallas Texans/Kansas City Chiefs franchise from 1960-1974. He is the winningest coach in club history, and the only coach in the history of the American Football League to guide his team to a pair of Super Bowls.

He guided the Chiefs to their only two Super Bowl appearances as Kansas City lost to the Green Bay Packers, 35-10, in Super Bowl I and beat the Minnesota Vikings, 23-7, in Super Bowl IV.


Boonen wins again; Armstrong still second

TOURS, France, July 4 (UPI) -- Belgian Tom Boonen won for the second straight day at the 2005 Tour de France Monday and six-time defending champion Lance Armstrong remained in second place.

Armstrong, after Monday's third stage, was still two seconds behind fellow American David Zabriskie for the overall lead. The top 10 remained unchanged following Monday's 133-mile trek from La Châtaigneraie to Tours.

Boonen outsprinted Austrian Peter Wrolich and completed the stage in four hours, 36.09 seconds. Australia's Stuart O'Grady was placed third after countryman Robbie McEwen was dropped to last for failing to maintain a straight line during the sprint to the finish.

Armstrong, seeking a seventh consecutive title, officially finished 88th in a time identical to the winner's.

Tuesday's fourth stage is a 41.9-mile team time trial from Tours to Blois.


Most play at Swiss Open rained out

GSTAAD, Switzerland, July 4 (UPI) -- Heavy rains postponed most of the action in the first day of the Swiss Open Monday.

In the only completed match, Spain's Fernando Verdasco defeated Jaroslav Pospisil of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-4.

Sixth-seeded Czech Jiri Novak, a two-time winner at this event, trailed Italian Potito Starace 3-6, 4-4 before play was suspended. In the only other match that got underway, Austria's Stefan Koubek was up 2-1 in the first set against Italian Andreas Seppi before play was halted.

World No. 1 and defending champion Roger Federer, a native Swiss who captured his third straight Wimbledon title on Sunday, decided not to play in this year's tournament.


Baseball All-Stars include 11 first-timers

PHILADELPHIA, July 4 (UPI) -- This year's All-Star game in Detroit will feature 11 first-timers, replacing the heavy-hitting likes of Randy Johnson, Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa.

Also missing from the July 12 game at Detroit's Comerica Park will be Ken Griffey Jr., Greg Maddux and Rafael Palmeiro.

Among the first timers from the American League will be the Texas Rangers' first baseman Mark Teixera and Baltimore second baseman Brian Roberts.

For the National League, Chicago Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee, St. Louis shortstop David Eckstein and Philadelphia outfielder Bobby Abreu will all make their All-Star debuts.
