Ferrie wins European Open

DUBLIN, Ireland, July 3 (UPI) -- Kenneth Ferrie won the European Open at Dublin, Ireland, beating Colin Montgomerie and Graeme Storm by one stroke.

Ferrie came out of nowhere, erasing a seven-shot deficit with a 2-under 70 in the final round to finish at 3-under 285. It was his second career title on the European Tour.

Ferrie was just 114th on the Order of Merit.

In the closing 18 holes, Montgomerie shot 3-under 69 and Storm carded a 1-over 73.

Thomas Bjorn, who held a four-shot lead at the start of the round, struggled. He hit three balls into the water at 17 and made an 11 at the hole.

Darren Clarke and Peter Hanson both shot 73 and tied for fourth at even-par 288. Defending champion Retief Goosen shot 72 on Sunday and tied for 13th at 2-over 290.

U.S. Open winner Michael Campbell carded a 3-over 75 and shared 25th at 4-over 292.
