MLB suspends Yankees' Sheffield two games

NEW YORK, June 30 (UPI) -- Major League Baseball has suspended Gary Sheffield of the New York Yankees for two games because of an outburst during a June 26 game against the New York Mets.

Sheffield was also fined an undisclosed amount of money for his actions during the game at Shea Stadium. Sheffield was ejected from the game for throwing his helmet after he was called out at first by umpire C.B. Bucknor.

Bob Watson, vice president of On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, said Sheffield was being disciplined for "his inappropriate and aggressive actions" during the game.

The Major League Baseball Player's Association has appealed the suspension and fine, so the suspension will not be enforced until the appeal is heard.
