NBA: San Antonio 81, Detroit 74

SAN ANTONIO, June 24 (UPI) -- Tim Duncan had 25 points and 11 rebounds Thursday night as the San Antonio Spurs beat Detroit, 81-74, to win the NBA championship and dethrone the Pistons.

Duncan was named the Most Valuable Player, and teammate Robert Horry, who had 15, won his sixth championship ring.

Manu Ginobili added 23.

For the Pistons, Chauncey Billups had 13 points, four rebounds and eight assists and Richard Hamilton contributed 15 points.

Detroit had won the title in 2004.

It was the Spurs' third NBA title in seven years.

The Pistons failed for the second time in franchise history in a Game Seven. There had not been a seventh game in the NBA Finals since 1994, when Houston beat the New York Knicks.
