MLB: Seattle 3, Philadelphia 1

SEATTLE, June 15 (UPI) -- The Seattle Mariners downed the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 on strong pitching from Gil Meche, who allowed just three hits in eight strong innings.

Meche (6-4) also struck out four batters and walked two. Eddie Guardado notched his 18th save of the season with a perfect ninth.

Dave Hansen hit a solo homer and drove in two runs for the Mariners, while Ichiro Suzuki picked up the 1,000th hit of his career.

Jim Thome had an RBI single for the Phillies. Tomas Perez and Jimmy Rollins rounded out Philadelphia's offense with a single apiece.

Jon Lieber (8-5) was handed the loss despite going the distance for the Phillies. He was charged with three runs and 10 hits in eight innings. It was his first complete game of the season and 22nd of his career.
