Dodgers sign Penny through 2009

LOS ANGELES, June 13 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed right-handed pitcher Brad Penny to a three, possibly four-year contract potentially worth $32.25 million.

Penny will receive a $3 million signing bonus paid over the next three years, plus salaries of $4.5 million, $7 million and $8.5 million. There is a club option for a fourth year at $9.25 million, or a $2 million buyout.

The contract also included a limited no-trade clause specifying five teams, MLB.com reported.

The 27-year-old Penny would have been eligible for free agency at the end of this season. He is 3-2 with a 4.04 ERA in 10 starts this season, and has pitched six or more innings in seven of those outings.

He spent the first four weeks of this season on the disabled list healing from a biceps nerve injury, but has not missed a start since returning.
