GALLOWAY, N.J., June 3 (UPI) -- Juli Inkster shot a 6-under 65 in a steady rain Friday to grab a two-shot advantage over Annika Sorenstam after one round of the ShopRite Classic.
Inkster is a two-time winner of this event and finished off her round with a four-foot birdie putt.
Sorenstam, who has also captured this tournament twice, was alone in second at 67 while Mi Hyun Kim shot a 69. The only other player under par was Jeong Jang, who shot a 70.
"It was extremely difficult. The wind was blowing. The rain just did not let up all day long until maybe we got to the 18th green," Inkster said. "It was just a driving rain all day. I made a couple long putts and I chipped in twice, but I missed a couple short ones too."
Sorenstam's round was highlighted by a five-foot eagle putt at the par-5 16th.
"I really didn't get off to a good start, but then again it wasn't the nicest day of golf today," said Sorenstam. "I thought it was quite difficult."
