NEW YORK, June 2 (UPI) -- Major League Baseball Thursday named Jimmie Lee Solomon executive vice president of baseball operations.
His hiring was announced by Commissioner Bud Selig. Solomon has been in the sport since 1991 and will join Jonathan Mariner as the top-ranking African-American official in the commissioner's office. Mariner is an executive vice president and MLB's chief financial officer.
"Major League Baseball is fortunate to have a man of Jimmie Lee's experience, intellect, and dedication already on board to handle such a complex and important position as the chief of our baseball operations," Selig said on MLB's Web site.
"Over the years he has demonstrated considerable skill in working through the labyrinth of our Minor League system. I have great confidence that he will be an enormous success in this key position."
Solomon replaces Sandy Alderson, who is now is CEO and head of day-to-day operations of the San Diego Padres. Alderson left his MLB post on May 1.
