MINNEAPOLIS, June 2 (UPI) -- Minnesota Vikings center Matt Birk says he "fully expects" to be ready for the season opener despite undergoing hip surgery this week.
The 6-4, 309-pound Birk, a sixth-round draft pick by the Vikings out of Harvard in 1998, is one of Minnesota's top offensive linenen. The four-time Pro Bowl choice and three-time all-pro has had three operations for hernias in the last nine months.
"I'm doing well," Birk told the Thursday's Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "Everything with the surgery went well."
He said he "fully expects" to be ready for the Vikings' season opener against Tampa Bay on Sept. 11.
"I'm going to go strictly on how I feel," he said.
Trainer Chuck Barter originally said it would take Birk 8-12 months to recover.
