KANSAS CITY, Mo., June 2 (UPI) -- Wide receiver Johnnie Morton was released Thursday by the Kansas City Chiefs, ending his three-year stint with the team.
Morton, a first-round draft pick by the Detroit Lions in 1994, had signed as a free agent in March 2002. In three seasons with Kansas City, Morton, 33, who was asked two weeks ago to stay away from team practices this spring, caught 134 passes for 1,932 yards. He had eight touchdown receptions.
"We appreciate Johnnie Morton's effort during his tenure with the Kansas City Chiefs," Chiefs President Carl Peterson said. "We wish him the best in the future."
In his 11-year career, Morton has 603 catches for 8,431 yards and 43 touchdowns and also has 24 kickoff returns, on which he has scored one touchdown.
