Zito voted into Hall of Fame

SARASOTA SPRINGS, N.Y., June 1 (UPI) -- Two-time Kentucky Derby winning trainer Nick Zito was among four selections for horse racing's Hall of Fame.

He joined three steeple-chase stars -- jockey Thomas Walsh, trainer Sidney Watters Jr. and five-time champion Lonesome Glory. The steeple-chase inductees announced Tuesday are the first since 1997.

Through Tuesday, Zito, who also has captured the Preakness and Belmont, giving him a career Triple Crown, has 1,410 wins.

"It's very gratifying, but more important, I'm very humbled by it," Zito said in a statement released by the Hall of Fame. "I don't know what else to say. I absolutely really appreciate it. That's the main thing."

Walsh had 253 wins in his 12-year career. Watters led or shared the lead in steeple-chase victories in a season six times. Lonesome Glory is the leading money-earning horse in steeple-chase history with $1.4 million.

An induction ceremony will be held Aug. 8 at Saratoga Springs.
