Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

WASHINGTON, June 1 (UPI) -- Marcus Giles drove in the go-ahead run as part of a three-run eighth Wednesday night, helping rally Atlanta to a 5-4 win over Washington.
Wilson Betemit hit a two-run homer to tie it in the eighth, having been put in the lineup as a last-minute replacement for shortstop Rafael Furcal. After the homer, Julio Franco walked, pinch-runner Pete Orr stole second and Giles singled him home with the winning run.
John Smoltz (4-4) gave up four runs on six hits over seven innings and came up with the win when the Braves rallied. Chris Reitsma earned a two-inning save.
The loss went to Hector Carrasco (1-1).
