GREEN BAY, Wis., May 31 (UPI) -- The Green Bay Packers Tuesday announced it was retiring the number of the late Reggie White, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year.
White died of a heart condition Dec. 26. His number will be retired during a ceremony at the Packers' first home game on Sept. 18.
White, who retired in 2000 while with the Carolina Panthers, helped the Packers win Super Bowl XXXI in 1997. He left the game as the all-time sacks leader in Green Bay (681/2) and the NFL (198).
In his final Packers season, he had 16 sacks, his most in 10 years as a pro. The team said on its Web site that it had decided before White's death to honor him with a jersey retirement ceremony.
"He was very honored," President Bob Harlan said.
The team has retired five other player numbers. Fullback Tony Canadeo, wide receiver Don Hutson, quarterback Bart Starr and linebacker Ray Nitschke are all in the NFL Hall of Fame.
