
MEMPHIS, May 29 (UPI) -- Justin Leonard had a week's worst 3-over 73 Sunday but still, at 14-under 266, won the FedEx St. Jude Classic by one stroke over David Toms.
"I ought to write a book called 'Winning Ugly', because I've done it. I did it today," said Leonard, who earned $882,000. "I didn't think it was ever going to get that close."
Toms, the 2003 and 2004 winner shot a 7-under 63 to wind up at 267. Fred Funk was third at 271. Heath Slocum and Davis Love III were at 272.
Leonard who got his 10th PGA Tour victory.
Toms, 2001 PGA Champion, eagled the par-five 16th to get within three and closed to two when he chipped in for birdie on the 17th. Toms, who missed the cut at this event three of his first four tries, has now finished in the top four in each of the last four years.
