MLB: Philadelphia 5, Atlanta 1

ATLANTA, May 27 (UPI) -- Jim Thome delivered a three-run homer in a four-run first Friday night and Philadelphia went on to 5-1 victory over Atlanta.

Cory Lidle (5-3) protected the early lead by giving up one run over 6 2/3 innings. Rheal Cormier and Billy Wagner finished off the win.

Philadelphia scored four times before Atlanta starter John Smoltz could record an out. Smoltz (3-4) gave up eight hits over six innings.

Atlanta had won its previous three games while Philadelphia improved to 4-3 on a nine-game road trip.
