Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
ENGLEWOOD, Colo., May 25 (UPI) -- The Denver Broncos Wednesday signed veteran wide-out Jerry Rice, the NFL's all-time leading receiver.
The 42-year-old Rice will make an attempt to play his 21st professional season with the Broncos in 2005. But Coach Mike Shanahan indicates Rice has been told he is not guaranteed a spot on Denver's 53-man roster.
"Jerry knows that he's going to come here and compete with the rest of the guys," Shanahan said on the team's Web site. "There's no (promise) of him being the third receiver, the fourth receiver, the fifth receiver. We're going to give him a chance to compete with the other receivers."
Denver's top three receivers are Rod Smith, Ashley Lelie, and Darius Watts.
Rice played for Oakland and Seattle during 2004 and had a combined 30 receptions for 429 yards and three touchdowns.
The two-time NFL Player of the Year has 1,549 receptions for 22,895 yards and 197 touchdowns and is the league's career leader in total touchdowns with 208.
