Afleet Alex wins Preakness Stakes

BALTIMORE, May 21 (UPI) -- Afleet Alex stumbled down the stretch Saturday but recovered to win the 130th running of the Preakness Stakes.

Afleet Alex, owned by Cash is King Stables, went off as a 3-1 favorite and picked up the $1 million purse.

The colt nearly fell down the stretch while trying to avoid a collision with second-place finisher Scrappy T. Jockey Jeremy Rose was able to get the horse rebalanced and dash to the finish line.

Afleet Alex, third in the Kentucky Derby, finished five lengths ahead of Scrappy T.

Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo finished third followed by Sun King, High Limit, Noble Causeway, Greeley's Galaxy, Malibu Moonshine, Closing Argument, High Fly, Hal's Image, Wilko, Galloping Grocer and Going Wild.

The time was 1:55 on a fast track.

Afleet Alex returned $8.60, $5.00 and $3.20. Scrappy T paid $11.20 and $5.80, and Giacomo paid $4.80 for show.
