JUPITER, Fla., May 20 (UPI) -- Greg Norman announced Friday his debut as a senior golfer will have to be delayed.
Norman had planed to play in the 66th Senior PGA Championship, which begins May 26 at the Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pa.
But he said he will not be fully recovered from the back surgery he underwent in March. Norman turned 50 on Feb. 10.
"It is unfortunate that I am forced to withdraw from the Senior PGA," Norman said. "I have maintained a very solid relationship with the PGA of America through the years and I thought it was most appropriate that one of its major championships would be my first senior event.
"It's just that I don't feel like I'm ready to compete at major championship level yet. After conferring with my physician, we decided that it was in my best interest to stay the course of the rehabilitation program that was outlined immediately after surgery."
