Kenny Perry takes three-shot lead

FORT WORTH, Texas, May 20 (UPI) -- Kenny Perry, regaining the form that earned him three victories in 2003, built a three-shot lead Friday at the Bank of America Colonial.

Perry, whose victory in this event two years ago was overshadowed by the appearance of Annika Sorenstam, shot a 7-under 63 Friday for a two-day total of 12-under 128.

Thursday's gusty spring winds were replaced by the first blast of summer with temperatures soaring into the 90s.

Perry, playing in the worst of the afternoon heat, produced a bogey-free round. Ted Purdy, winner last week at the Byron Nelson Championship, and rookie D.J. Trahan shared second at 131.

Kirk Triplett was alone in fourth at 132 after his second straight 66 while Rod Pampling, Billy Mayfair and Steve Stricker were all at 133.

First-round leader Patrick Sheehan was among those at 134. Phil Mickelson, after a triple bogey at the par-4 fifth, birdied three of the last five holes to barely make the cut at even-par 140.
