Giants get Hasselbeck off waivers

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., May 9 (UPI) -- The New York Giants were awarded quarterback Tim Hasselbeck off waivers on Monday as a back-up to starter Eli Manning.

Hasselbeck, a four-year veteran, spent the past two seasons with the Washington Redskins. He was the club's third string quarterback in 2004.

Veteran Giants quarterback Jim Miller may not be available this coming season after undergoing recent hip surgery.

asselbeck has played in nine NFL games, with five starts. He has passed for 1,012 yards with five touchdowns and seven interceptions.


Dolphins' cornerback Poole could miss season

MIAMI, May 9 (UPI) -- Miami Dolphins cornerback Will Poole could miss the 2005 season because of a knee injury it was reported Monday.

Poole injured his left knee in practice last week, the Miami Herald said.

The Dolphins did not issue an injury report on Poole, but agent Drew Rosenhaus told Miami television station WSVN the 23-year-old player may have torn a ligament in the knee.

"We think it's pretty significant," Rosenhaus said.

Poole, who was drafted by Miami in the fourth round in 2004, played in 15 games last season, recording 37 tackles and one sack.

Western Kentucky player Danny Rumph dies

BOWLING GREEN, Ky., May 9 (UPI) -- Western Kentucky University junior guard Danny Rumph collapsed and died while playing basketball in Philadelphia, school officials said Monday.

Rumph, 21, collapsed during a pickup game Sunday, a report from WKU said.

He had been visiting his family in Philadelphia. Coach Darrin Horn said he received a call from Rumpf's family early Monday.

"We are shocked and saddened by the tragic news we received this morning," Horn said. "Danny was loved and respected by not only everyone in the basketball program, but by many people in the Western community. Our thoughts and prayers are with Danny's family."


U.S. reaches World Hockey quarterfinals

INNSBRUCK, Austria, May 9 (UPI) -- The United States tied Ukraine 1-1 Monday and clinched a spot in the quarterfinals of the World Hockey Championships in Austria.

Brett Hauer scored the U.S. goal to tie the game in the third period.

The U.S. team had a 39-9 advantage in shots but was unable to get a second goal on Ukrainian goaltender Kostyantyn Simchuck, who stopped a penalty shot by Zach Parise with 1:25 to play.

In another game, Russia, which has also advanced, beat Kazakhstan 3-1.
