U.S. reaches world hockey quarterfinals

INNSBRUCK, Austria, May 9 (UPI) -- The United States tied Ukraine 1-1 Monday and clinched a spot in the quarterfinals of the World Hockey Championships in Austria.

Brett Hauer scored the U.S. goal to tie the game in the third period.

The U.S. team had a 39-9 advantage in shots but was unable to get a second goal on Ukrainian goaltender Kostyantyn Simchuck, who stopped a penalty shot by Zach Parise with 1:25 to play.

In another game, Russia, which has also advanced, beat Kazakhstan 3-1.
