Steinbrenner hopes for luck in the Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 6 (UPI) -- The 131st Kentucky Derby will be run Saturday with New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner hoping his horse will do better than his baseball team.

Steinbrenner's Bellamy Road will go the post at Churchill Downs as the 5-2 favorite in a maximum field of 20.

Bellamy Road became the betting favorite for America's most significant horse race thanks to his 17 1/2-length victory in the Wood Memorial.

The Yankees, meanwhile, are fighting to stay out of the basement of their division.

Afleet Alex is the second favorite at 9-2.

Trainer Nick Zito will saddle five horses for the race, including Bellamy Road. He will also have High Fly, Sun King, Andromeda's Hero and Noble Causeway in the race.

D. Wayne Lukas, who has trainer four Derby winners, will be trying for his first victory in six years with Going Wild.

Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel, who has never won the Derby, will try to do so with High Limit.

Clear skies were forecast for the race with temperatures in the upper 70s.
