St. Andrews rejects Nicklaus honor

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland, May 4 (UPI) -- St. Andrews, Scotland, snubbed Jack Nicklaus by failing to make him an honorary citizen of the city where he will play what may be his last golf tournament.

Nicklaus, 65, delayed retirement to play in the July tournament in Scotland and twice won the Open Championship at St. Andrews. Nicklaus also is a six-time U.S. Masters winner.

Backers proposed granting Nicklaus honorary citizenship, but got only 13 of the required 16 votes from the St. Andrews Community Council, the Glasgow (Scotland) Herald reported.

One opponent said the honor should be reserved for someone who has made long-term contributions to the community, but backers were upset.

We "have missed out on a unique opportunity to honor the world's greatest golfer in this, the home of golf," said Keith McCartney, a former chairman of the community organization.

"It now looks like a snub to Jack Nicklaus," said Murdo MacDonald, another former chairman.
