Roddick, Agassi advance at Italian Masters

ROME, May 4 (UPI) -- Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi both reached the third round Wednesday at the Italian Masters.

Rafael Nadel, seeking his third straight tournament title and his fifth clay court crown of the year, also stormed past the second round while Australian Open winner Marat Safin was eliminated.

Safin was an upset victim of Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 6-3. Since winning in Melbourne to start the year, Safin has yet to reach the quarterfinals in six events.

Roddick, who has yet to lose in seven matches on clay this year, defeated Albert Costa 6-4, 7-5. Next up for Roddick will be Fernando Verdasco.

Agassi easily won over ichard Gasquet 6-2, 6-3, setting up a third-round matchup with Ivan Ljubicic.

Nadal was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Victor Hanescu. It was Nadal's 13th straight match victory.
