CINCINNATI, May 3 (UPI) -- Linebacker Kevin Hardy, a former Pro Bowler, was released Tuesday by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Hardy, 31, started 30 games in two years with the Bengals. He previously played for Jacksonville and Dallas.

Cincinnati drafted two linebackers last month and by releasing Hardy the team saves about $1 million against its salary cap.

"Kevin's leadership abilities and professionalism have been a huge asset to me and our football team and this is a difficult decision to make," Coach Marvin Lewis said. "However, for Kevin's ability to gain an opportunity with another team, this is the best timing."
