Kevin Harvick wins NASCAR pole

TALLADEGA, Ala., April 29 (UPI) -- Kevin Harvick won the pole Friday for Sunday's Nextel Cup Aaron's 499 at the Talladega Supespeedway.

Harvick turned one lap on the high-speed circuit in 50.452 seconds for a speed of 189.804 miles per hour. It was Harvick's first pole of the year and the third of his career.

Starting alongside Harvick will be Jeff Gordon, who had a lap time of 50.670 seconds. Gordon is the defending champion of this event.

Elliott Sadler, Scott Riggs and Ryan Newman rounded out the top five while points leader Jimmie Johnson qualified sixth.
