Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
CHICAGO, April 26 (UPI) -- Chicago Cubs shortstop Nomar Garciaparra has decided to have surgery on his injured left groin.
Garciaparra suffered a ruptured tendon during an at-bat last week in St. Louis.
A report on mlb.com Tuesday said there is no timetable for Garciaparra's return and that he is "definitely cautiously optimistic that I'll have some season left this year."
Garciaparra said he felt the groin pop as he began to run to first base after hitting a grounder. He was carried off the field.
"I'm not going to have the surgery to repair the tendon," Garciaparra said, "but I am going to have a surgical procedure. It won't be as invasive, it's going to be more of a minor procedure."
Garciaparra was batting .157 for the season with no home runs and four runs batted in. He missed half of the 2004 season with various injuries.
