NEW YORK, April 23 (UPI) -- Utah quarterback Alex Smith was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers Saturday as the top overall pick in the NFL draft.
It was the fifth straight year a quarterback was the No. 1 selection.
The 6-4 Smith has graduated, doing so in two years. He was 21-1 in two years as a starter at the Mountain West Conference school, completed 68 percent of his passes and threw for 32 touchdowns with only four interceptions.
Three Auburn players, including running back Ronnie Brown, who went to Miami with the No. 2 pick, were among the first 10 chosen.
Cleveland used its No. 3 slot to take wide receiver Braylon Edwards of Michigan.
The Chicago Bears had the No. 4 pick and took Texas running back Cedric Benson. Tampa Bay then chose Auburn back Carnell Williams with the No. 5 pick.
The next players chosen were Adam "Pacman" Jones of West Virginia (6), by Tennessee;
South Carolina receiver Troy Williamson (7), by Minnesota; cornerback Antrel Rolle of Miami (8), by Arizona; Auburn cornerback Carlos Rogers Rogers (9), by Washington, and receiver Mike Williams of Southern Cal (10) by Detroit.
