New Jersey defeated Boston, 102-93, rallying in the second half to claim the No. 8 spot in the East.

The Nets and Cleveland tied for that position, but New Jersey owned the tiebreak advantage by virtue of a better record against the Cavaliers this season.

The playoffs begin Saturday.

No contract, no play

NEW YORK, April 21 (UPI) -- The NHL decided Wednesday that no season would start without a collective bargaining agreement.

There had been speculation the 2005-06 season might start without an agreement but with replacement players.

League officials said Wednesday that would not be the case.
