Singh leads at Houston Open

HUMBLE, Texas, April 21 (UPI) -- Defending champion Vijay Singh shot an 8-under 64 Thursday that not only equaled the course record but gave him a one-shot lead in the Houston Open.

Singh jumped on top one day after it was announced he had been elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Gavin Coles and Brendan Jones tied for second after the first round at 65.

"Things like that don't sink in at first," Singh said of his Hall of Fame honor. "It's no big deal at this particular moment. I mean, it's a great feeling to have, but I think weeks and months from now, it's going to be a really big deal for me."

This was one of 10 tournaments Singh won in 2004 en route to player-of-the-year honors.

Jeff Maggert, Jimmy Walker, Tim Herron, Ted Purdy, Chris Smith, Carl Paulson, Greg Owen and Brett Quigley were all at 67. John Daly was among those who shot 68.
