Canada names team for world hockey

CALGARY, Alberta, April 11 (UPI) -- Team Canada, which has won the last two World Hockey Championships, announced its roster Monday for this year's event in Austria.

The Canadian players, all from NHL teams, include goaltenders Martin Brodeur of New Jersey, Robert Luongo of Florida and Marty Turco of Dallas.

Forwards are Kris Draper,Toronto; Dany Heatley, Atlanta; Ryan Smyth, Edmonton; Patrick Marleau, San Jose; Joe Thornton, Boston; Rick Nash, Columbus; Shane Doan, Phoenix; Brenden Morrow, Dallas; Mike Fisher, Ottawa; Simon Gagne, Philadelphia; Kirk Maltby, Detroit, and Brendan Morrison, Vancouver.

Defensemen are Sheldon Souray, Montrea; Wade Redden, Ottawa; Scott Hannan, San Jose; Ed Jovanovski, Vancouver; Robyn Regehr, Calgary; Chris Phillips, Calgary, and Dan Boyle, Ottawa.

The world event will be played in Innsbruck and Vienna, Austria, April 30-May 15.

Canadian teams have won 23 gold medals in the tournament since 1920.

"We are very pleased to name this group of Canadian players today, and know that each of them is honored and want to represent Canada with the passion to go for our third straight gold medal and to give back to our game across the country," said Steve Tambellini, general manager of the team.
